"Sacred Grounds"
Shi shi Beach
Shi Shi Beach is located on the Northernmost
point of the wild ocean coast of Olympic National Park. It is a two
mile crescent shape strip of sand bound on the north by the Makah Indian
Reservation and on the South by Point of Arches. The jagged rocks
on the water are called Sea Stacks. Access to this beach is by hiking
along four difficult miles of large old growth forest from the Makah Reservation.
Long ago, the Makah Indians had carved totem poles depicting their artistic
symbols and designs using the driftwood logs along the beach. Now
all are decaying and lost to high tide and weather. One was still
standing in the late 70's. It was a large image of Big Foot, or called
by other names by the Makah tribe. Lots of driftwood and glass floats can
be found along this magnificent beach in the winter after the storms.
Artist's Note: Our family has hiked
to this Sacred place many times during the time that my husband was stationed
at Makah Air Force Station in the late 70's (the base was inside the reservation).
We had to get permission from the Tribe to go to this particular beach.
I called this painting Scared Grounds because when you finally reach this
beautiful place, you feel that God is there with you .
It is by far the ultimate church on earth!
